Wineskins

Before the 1970’s if you wanted to buy a good watch you bought a Swiss watch because the Swiss were well known for their accuracy and precision.

But in the 1970’s a guy (I will tell you his name later) came along and discovered that if you applied an electric current to a crystal of quartz the molecules would vibrate at a very fast and predictable rate. And because of this property you could potentially make an extremely accurate watch.

So he flew to Switzerland with his idea and presented it to all of the major watch-making companies who promptly laughed him out of their office.

Undeterred, he started a watch company of his own and within a few years almost all of the Swiss watch companies went out of business. The guy’s name was Seiko and he invented the Quartz watch which we all use today.

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were like the Swiss watch-makers, they were set in their old way of doing things and could not recognize Jesus, the new way of doing things.

Luke 5: 37-39
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’”

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were like old wineskins who said “the old is good enough.” Only instead of laughing Jesus out of their office they crucified Him.

So…

Do you recognize Jesus the new way of doing things?

Or are you stuck in your old way of doing things about to go out of business?
