The First Pentecost

In the post on the Crucifixion we saw that the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of the first three spring festivals – Passover, Unleavened Bread and First Fruits literally to the day and the hour.

Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks is the fourth spring festival which was also fulfilled literally to the day when the Holy Spirit came down upon the Apostles on that first Pentecost and wrote the law on their hearts.

Deuteronomy 16:9, 10

“You shall count seven weeks for yourself; you shall begin to count seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. Then you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give just as the LORD your God blesses you.”

Shavuot is also known in Judaism as the day of “the giving of the Torah” which occurred 50 days after the Israelites fled from Egypt and the day when, on Mount Sinai, the Lord gave Moses the law which He had written on stone tablets…

Exodus 24:12

Now the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and remain there, and I will give you the stone tablets with the law and the commandment which I have written for their instruction.”

Both Jeremiah and Ezekiel prophesied that one day the Lord would write His law on the hearts of His people…

Jeremiah 31:33

“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the LORD, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”

Ezekiel 11:19, 20

“And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God.”

Jesus said that in order to enter into the kingdom of God one had to be born of water and the Spirit

John 3:3-5

Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

Jesus also said that He would ask the Father to give us a Helper, the Spirit of truth, who would teach us all things…

John 14:16, 17

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”

John 14:26

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

However, the Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified…

John 7:37-39

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

50 days after Jesus was raised from the dead on the festival of Shavuot when the Apostles were gathered together there was a noise like a violent rushing wind and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1-4

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

On that first Pentecost - the very anniversary of Shavuot when the Lord gave Moses the law which He had written on stone tablets - the prophecy of the fourth spring festival was fulfilled when the Lord gave His people the Holy Spirit and wrote the law on their hearts.

So…

Has the Helper, the Spirit of truth filled you?

Has the law been written on your heart?
