A Bruised Reed

Isaiah 42:3

“A bruised reed He will not break

 And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;

 He will faithfully bring forth justice.”

Many people think that this verse refers to Jesus’ gentle nature where He would not break a bruised reed or extinguish a dimly burning wick.

However, in the literal Hebrew translation the bruised reed and the dimly burning wick are actually Jesus and are a prophecy of His resurrection…

Luke 9:21, 22

But He warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”

After Jesus suffered and was rejected and killed He was raised up on the third day. In other words Jesus is the “bruised reed” that cannot be broken and the “dimly burning wick” that cannot be extinguished.

This verse also has a valuable lesson for you and me where even in those dark times when our faith is being tested and all hope seems lost the Lord will not allow us to be broken or extinguished. And He will raise us up when our testing is over.

So…

Have you been tested like a bruised reed?

Has the Lord raised you up?
