The Resurrection

Was the tomb of Jesus really empty?…

John 19:38-40

Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body. Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.

The burial custom of the Jewish people was to wrap the body with strips of linen mixed with myrrh and aloes. And when the myrrh and aloes dried the linen strips would harden forming a cast around the body. They would also place a separate cloth over the face…

Luke 24:12a

But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only;

John 20:6-8

And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.

When Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved entered the tomb they saw that the face-cloth had been removed so they could look inside the hardened cast made by the linen wrappings. And what they saw was the linen wrappings only, the cast was empty and the body of Jesus was gone which is why he saw and believed.

Mark 16:6 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

“Don't be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has been resurrected! He is not here! See the place where they put Him.”

Jesus had been raised from the dead - just like He said He would…

John 2:19-21

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body.

John 10:17, 18

“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

John 11:25, 26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

So…

Do you believe this?
